Streaming music service Songza has always tried to pick the right songs for your mood, but until now it hasn’t been able to factor in the weather.
A new partnership with The Weather Channel allows Songza to tap into local forecasts, and suggest playlists based on what’s happening outside. Users will soon see an option for weather-based playlists in the Concierge section of Songza’s apps and Website.
For example, a thunderstorm might offer playlists that are “relaxing and soothing,” “angry and brooding” or “anxious and nervous,” as noted by VentureBeat. Songza can get pretty specific about the current conditions, even offering a “dancing in the rain” playlist during a sun shower.
Most of Songza’s Concierge playlists are based on general moods or activities, such as “waking up happy,” or “a sweaty dance party.” There’s no way to control exactly which playlists are available at any given time; the suggestions are automated, and based on signals such as location, time of day, device type and past behavior.
But it’s possible that weather data may inform these other types of playlists as well. Songza says its partnership with The Weather Channel will allow it to “understand and accommodate subconscious changes to people’s routines that are driven by relative changes in temperature, precipitation and more.”
Weather-based Songza playlists should start showing up today. In addition to its Website, Songza has apps for iOS, Android, Windows Phone and Windows 8.
