We’ve already got airborne drones to deliver piping hot treats like tacos and burritos. After munching away on all that tortilla-wrapped goodness, you’re bound to be rather parched. Have no fear! This is where the beer-copter comes into save the day by airdropping cold brews to the thirsty masses.
In other words, it’s quite literally going to rain beer thanks to small flying robots.
This isn’t just some one-time YouTube demo, either. The Beer Drone, developed by Darkwing Aerials, will serve as a fully functioning beer delivery system for South Africa’s Oppikoppi music festival, which will take place August 8 though 10.
If you happen to be attending at the District 9 campsite, you’ll be able to order a beer through an iOS app. From there, a modified octocopter from SteadiDrone loaded with your frosty beverage will take off and head over your relative location based on your GPS coordinates. Once the drone finds you, it will airdrop your cold one with a little help from a mini parachute. Given some luck and some favorable wind, you’ll be able to grab the drink out of the air.
Although the drone needs to be controlled manually at the moment, its creators are working on a model that will deliver drinks automatically using a pre-programmed GPS grid.
Our airspace is just getting a little more tasty everyday. Cheers!
