Remember the TacoCopter, that taco delivery quadrotor that turned out to be a hoax of sorts but eventually became a real thing? Now, aerial Mexican-food delivery is expanding to burritos with this new UAV plane bomber developed by Darwin Aerospace.
The Burrito Bomber is a completely open source food delivery drone that you could build yourself. The Darwin team used SkyWalker X8 Flying Wing for its frame, and used a 3D printer to make many of the parts, including the motor.
The plane uses Ardupilot to navigate the skies autonomously to a waypoint, but you can also guide it using a remote control. Once the drone reaches its destination, it deploys a burrito payload using a Quantum RTR Bomb System combined with a three inch mailing tube, some additional 3D-printed parts, and a parachute.
The Darwin Aerospace team has also put up all the code and 3D models it used to create the Burrito Bomber on its GitHub page.
In the future, you might be able to simply order a burrito from the Web app and get it delivered to you wherever you are. But this future will have to happen sometime after 2015, since commercial use of drones is prohibited under current FAA guidelines.
For now, hopes of a newly designated “tasty airspace” ride on the FAA Modernization And Reform Act Of 2012, which includes an article that would require the FAA to allow drones built by private companies to fly in U.S. airspace.
