LG is one of the first manufacturers to announce a new product designed around ADT’s new standalone monitoring service, debuting a new smart security camera Wednesday.
The five-megapixel camera supports 1080p video with a 152 degree field of view, and sports digital zoom capabilities. It also includes a built in 100-decibel siren that sounds when motion is detected, with functionality to prevent false alarms from “natural movements.” Size is another benefit: at five inches of height and only weighing one pound, you can place it just about anywhere.
Other features include temperature and humidity monitoring and the capability to do double duty as a smart hub, supporting devices using Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Low Energy, Z-wave and Zigbee. All functionality is controlled via ADT’s upcoming Canopy app.
While ADT declined to disclose any pricing to us when we first learned of Canopy earlier this week, LG’s press release claims that the service starts at $20 per month.
Those who might balk at a monthly subscription fee still have some options, though. LG’s Taryn Brucia tells us while the Smart Security camera requires the ADT Canopy app to function, a free tier allows access to the camera’s basic functions.
The LG Smart Security camera should release in the Spring following the official launch of ADT Canopy. Although no pricing was officially announced, Brucia tells us the camera is expected to retail for “around $200.”
