The NFL regular season kickoff is right around the corner, and if you don’t want to miss the action but your schedule’s looking a little busy, it might be time to get a DVR. The Amazon Fire TV Recast, an OTA (over-the-air) DVR we called “frustratingly close to great,” is tied today for its all-time low price of $180, down from a list price of $230.
The on-sale version of this DVR comes with up to 75 hours of recording time with its 500GB capacity. In our review, we liked how well the Recast interacts with other parts of the Fire TV, utilizing search functions and “Recents” tracking to help you find your content. It also works well with Alexa, so voice control is a breeze. The drawback? The Recast doesn’t just work well with Fire TV—it also requires the Fire TV in order to watch recordings on your TV, so if you’re not totally bought into the Fire TV framework yet, it might not be a great option for you. However, if you are (or want to be) a Fire TV user, this is a great way to get all your content in one place and record away.
In our review of the 75-hour Fire TV Recast, we gave the hardware 4 stars out of 5, noting that although it has some limitations (no ad skipping, no out-of-home streaming on other TVs, and that pesky Fire TV requirement), its easy setup, smooth playback, and low price even before the deal make it worth checking out.
