Google is adding some big names to the Chromecast roster just in time for Thanksgiving. On Tuesday, seven new apps embraced Google’s $35 streaming media stick, and almost all of them are from big name media companies.

Viacom is adding Chromecast support to both Comedy Central and Nickelodeon apps, and Sesame Street Go, Sesame Workshop’s subscription service, is also now casting. TuneIn Radio—with its selection of podcasts and radio streaming—now supports Chromecast, as does Encore Play, Epix, and YuppTV, a live streaming app for TV from India.

The story behind the story: Chromecast streaming options keep on growing. Earlier in November, Showtime signed up, and now we’re seeing apps from two major Viacom properties and other popular media outlets. It’s amazing to see how willing media companies are to jump on the Chromecast bandwagon. We’ve come a long way from the days when media companies gave Google TV the cold shoulder.

Cable details

Although it’s nice to see more apps adding Chromecast, not all of these services are created equally. If you’re paying the $30 per year and you live in the U.S. or Canada, then Sesame Go will work for you. Epix is also a subscription service available only to U.S. residents.

The Comedy Central app is pretty wide open to U.S. consumers; however, some shows do require a TV provider login. Similarly, Nickelodeon’s Nick app requires a cable subscription to get a larger selection of full episodes. Starz’s Encore also requires cable subscription from a participating provider.

The new Chromecast apps are great for adding content to your big screen in the living room—but many of these apps will be of only limited use to cord cutters.
