How do you know when a technology has gone from gimmick to cutting edge? When the porn industry adopts it, of course. Penthouse Magazine will launch the first adult 3D high-definition channel in Europe today, a venture dubbed PENTHOUSE 3D. The new channel offers naked programming daily from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m. (5 to 11 p.m. Eastern) to satisfy every European's quest for ooh-la-la. It's not clear whether Penthouse has any plans to launch its 3D channel in the United States.
Penthouse 3D will offer 30 hours of new 3D programming every month with content to satisfy the prurient interests of both softcore and hardcore fans in what the company describes as "100 percent Full 3D Native HD." The channel is available through European satellite provider SES Astra.
If nothing else, Penthouse's 3D launch reveals that 3D just might be here to stay this time, contrary to what the critics say. The world's porn purveyors have a healthy track record when it comes to poking and prodding new technologies that are later adopted by the mainstream. Porn helped to popularize online payment systems, video streaming, live chat, broadband Internet and many other technologies.

As for 3D, the porn industry has been playing around with the technology for some time, but Penthouse's entry into 3DTV signals that things are about to get serious. Penthouse won't be flying solo for much longer either, as its rival Hustler is also expected to launch a 3D channel in March. Playboy is also said to be considering 3DTV, according to the Financial Post.
It will be interesting to see if porn's march into 3D television will cause a sudden spike in 3D HDTV purchases in the coming months.
