Photo Contest: Hot Pics for November

Subscribers to Dave Johnson's Digital Focus newsletter took these shots.

11/1 Hot Pic: "Grand Turk" by Marc Wilson-Blackburn, North Yorkshire, UK

Marc says: "I took this picture of the Grand Turk in my hometown of Whitby just before it set sail. I chose not to include the main part of the boat to add some mysteriousness to the shot. Also, I added a sepia tone and increased the contrast in Adobe Lightroom."

11/8 Hot Pic: "Shoot the Moon" by Lee Tenneboe, Edmonds, Washington

Lee says: "This is a photo that I have always wanted to capture but never really knew how. A friend suggested a shutter speed of 1/200 at ISO 400 with f/8. I would not have thought of that, but it worked great! I'm really proud of this shot. I shot this last week during the full moon with my Canon Xsi on a tripod, then pulled out more detail with HDR toning."

11/15 Hot Pic: "Common Puffin" by Emily Mabee, Lewiston, Maine

Emily says: "I took this photo on Machias Seal Island, which is off the coast of Cutler, Maine, with a Canon 50D."

11/22 Hot Pic: "Tears of Water" by Reza Haghighipour, Rasht, Iran

Reza says: "I had someone open a pipe that was hanging on top of tree branch. I then put my camera on burst mode because it doesn't have a shutter priority mode, and I held the shutter button until I got this photo. I had to capture about 300 frames to get the photo you see here. I used my Sony DSC W-120."

11/29 Hot Pic: "Bettina" by Joanne Popovich, Phoenix, Arizona

Joanne took this photo while vacationing in Austria, in the Alpine village of Mondsee, using a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS.

11/1 Runner-up: "Making Friends" by Joanne Youlton, Chatham, Ontario

Joanne says: "This photo is from the summer that we rescued and raised an orphaned raccoon. Our basset hound was desperate for a friend, and found one in a handful of fur that was more than happy to follow him around and wrestle with him."

11/8 Runner-Up: "Long Tall Cool" by Kristin Cooper, Oneida, Tennessee

Kristin says: "I took this in my backyard. I know: How lucky can one get to have their own waterfall in the backyard? I used my Nikon D90."

11/15 Runner-Up: "Flowers and Bees" by Jill Ooms, Sidney, British Columbia

Jill captured this photo in her front yard using a Nikon D60.

11/22 Runner-Up: "Shadow Ride" by Jason Barnes, Arcata, California

Jason says: "I took this while mountain biking in the King Range National Conservation Area in California. At a certain point, the light rays started coming through the dust we were kicking up. I immediately jumped off my bike and grabbed my Nikon D80 and told my friends to keep riding around. The long shadows and the sun rays coming through the dust were mindblowing."

11/29 Runner-Up: "Little King of the Dahlias" by Marvin Mast, Tualatin, Oregon

Marvin says: "This summer, we found many Pacific Tree Frogs resting on our rose and dahlia blooms. I captured this one using a Canon 50D (on a tripod) with a 60mm macro lens."
