At this stage of our transition to a digital television system, not all shows are available in HD (Leno is, Letterman isn't), and your programming source will affect what you watch. You need to sort out the offerings from cable companies, satellite providers, and broadcast networks before deciding which option matches your taste and your budget most closely.
Most industry analysts say that high-definition television is to analog as color was to black-and-white, and that someday all programming will be in HD. But that day is probably still several years away (see "The Road Ahead for HD" on page 6 of this article).
