The best 7-inch Android tablet you can buy today, the Nexus 7 delivers solid performance and usability at a value price; but it also has at-times funky text rendering.
At $329, it's not cheap for a smaller tablet, but it's a well-designed and full-featured iPad with access to Apple's app ecosystem.
A reasonably capable budget tablet with access to Amazon's entire content ecosystem, including its curated Android app store.

If what you really want a tablet for is to read, this is the best choice. Silky smooth fonts and a crisp high-resolution display make it a pleasure to read and, because it's light, to hold in your hand.
