Don’t Be Forgotten: A Google Lunar X Prize Contender Will Land Your DNA on the Moon

This is an original one: If you have $10,000 to spare and want to fund a moon-landing project, you could be remembered for all posterity by sending your own DNA to the moon. Not only that, and perhaps even more exciting, you will get to place your own name or logo on the very spacecraft the lands on the Moon.

Who is offering this amazing deal? The Omega Envoy is one of 26 teams currently competing for the Google Lunar X Prize, an initiative for privately-funded space travel. A total of $30 million in prizes are available for teams who can safely land a robot on the moon and have it travel 500 meters.

The Omega Envoy crew, who wants to enable students to build a real spacecraft, is trying its luck on Kickstarter, and has many pledge rewards to give backers who help it reach its $200,000 goal. If $10,000 is a bit much for you, you can go for a lower pledge level and receive models, behind-the-scenes tours, or even a 5-gallon bucket of duck sauce. Seriously.

As of this writing, the team has raised just over $2000, with almost $180,000 left to go in just 15 days. While it doesn’t look good for the Omega Envoy, they can hope for several DNA lovers to show up and seal the deal quickly. The only question left is how the DNA will survive where no living creature was born before (at least as far as we know).
