Amazon Prime Instant Video Adds Hundreds of Classic MGM Movies, TV Shows
Amazon Prime Instant Video can't match the depth of Netflix's catalog, but it's getting better. Amazon today announced a licensing deal with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios that will bring "hundreds" of classic MGM movies and TV shows to it streaming service this year.
“MGM offers one of the most distinguished catalogs in all of Hollywood, and this deal will bring Prime Instant Video customers hundreds of new titles to enjoy on their Kindle Fire or any device compatible with Amazon Instant Video," said Brad Beale, Amazon's director of digital video content acquisition, in a statement.
So which MGM titles will be added to Prime Instant Video? Amazon didn't provide a full list, but did say that famous films such as The Silence of the Lambs, Dances with Wolves, Rain Man and The Terminator, as well as the Stargate sci-fi TV series, would be available.
Prime Instant Video is a perk of an Amazon Prime membership, which costs $79 annually and offers free two-day shipping on Amazon purchases. Prime subscribers can stream more than 18,000 movies and TV episodes at no additional charge. The Prime streaming service is separate from Amazon Instant Video, which rents or sells more than 120,000 titles.
It seems likely that Amazon will continue to add content to Prime Instant Video until one day the service is strong enough to stand on its own, capable of competing head-to-head with Netflix rather than functioning as an add-on for Amazon Prime members. A few more content deals with major Hollywood studios, and that day may arrive sooner than you'd think.
