Samsung’s Gear VR headset reportedly on track for IFA 2014 reveal

It’s looking ever-more likely that Samsung is getting into virtual reality soon, with new reports claiming that the so-called Gear VR headset will launch this fall.

According to SamMobile’s unnamed sources, Samsung plans to reveal the device at the IFA trade show in Berlin this September. The site has also posted a rendered image of the Gear VR, showing a red strap-on headset with a slot for a Samsung phone and a touchpad near the right temple.

Engadget corroborated the report, saying that its sources have seen something very similar to the images SamMobile has posted.

Although Samsung has stayed mum on its virtual reality plans, last month the company filed for a “Gear VR” trademark with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

As Engadget has reported previously, Samsung may be partnering with Oculus VR on the device, with the latter company providing the software. Oculus, in exchange, may get access to ultra-high resolution Samsung OLED displays for the consumer version of its Oculus Rift hardware.

With Samsung’s device, users will reportedly plug in a Samsung phone via USB, and the phone will provide the display and all the processing power. Though it’s unclear exactly what kind of experiences Samsung and Oculus have in mind, the focus will likely be on movies and virtual reality games. This is shaping up to be the first modern attempt to sell virtual reality to the masses, so hopefully Samsung doesn’t mess it up.
