Sony Finally Addresses PlayStation Network Outage
Sony finally has issued an official update on the attack that felled the PlayStation Network.
In a post on the official PlayStation Blog, Sony's Senior Director of Corporate Communications & Social Media, Patrick Seybold, has issued an official statement regarding the PlayStation Network/Qriocity outage.
The post cites an "illegal intrusion" as the cause of the network outage, and notes that, yes, some user account information was in fact compromised as early as "between April 17 and April 19, 2011."
"Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID," explains the post. "It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained."
The post urges gamers to "remain vigilant," and to closely monitor their account statements and credit reports. The post doesn't explain why it took so long to inform gamers of this security compromise.
Sony notes that they've taken steps towards rebuilding and strengthening the service's infrastructure, and hopes to restore "some services within a week.
