White iPhone Anticipated Next Week

Looks like the white iPhone 4 could actually arrive by the end of the month -- at least for those of you that live on the other side of the pond.

On Friday two tech sites received tips from independent sources that say the white variation of the ten-month-old device will be for sale in Europe starting next week.

Engadget received images of what appears to be a white iPhone 4 in retail packaging from a Vodaphone UK customer. The source was lucky enough to snap a few photos of the device -- which was ap

parently rung up as a black iPhone -- before Vodaphone sent out a memo to hold all units "until next week."

9 to 5 Mac received word that the white iPhone will be available in the Netherlands on Wednesday from "a tipster" from phone retailer BelCompany. A memo sent in by the source says all BelCompany stores will receive the white 16 GB model and a limited number will get one 32 GB Model.

The memo also warns that "supplies will be scarce" and new shipments are expected in four to five weeks after launch.

Limited supply of the phones shouldn't come as much of a surprise to anyone familiar with Apple product launches. (We're still looking at a two-to-three week shipping delay for the iPad 2.)

What is surprising is that we will be seeing the white model this late in the iPhone 4's lifecycle.

Traditionally Apple refreshes its phones at the WWDC in June. As Daniel Ionescu points out in another report about the device, "if the white iPhone 4 arrives at the end of this month, there will be just over a month between the release of the white, older model and the introduction of a brand-new iPhone."

Doesn't make much sense, unless you consider the rumor that WWDC 2011 may focus on software only and the iPhone 5 will be revealed at Apple's fall event in September.

The staggered release of the Verizon iPhone in February and a white iPhone 4 this month could be Apple's attempt to ease customers into a new September iPhone release cycle.

More likely, though, is the device's untimely arrival is just the result of a manufacturing problem.

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak admitted to Engadget in January that that the company was having problems manufacturing the white iPhone , but those issues had been resolved.

The only question remaining is whether or not the white iPhone will be coming to the states this week.

So far, there haven't been any inventory hiccups at stateside retailers, but that doesn't mean there aren't a few albino iPhones floating around the U.S.
