4G iPhone, or Just Chinese Whispers?

Reuters is reporting that China Mobile Ltd, the world's largest mobile carrier by subscribers, has claimed that Apple CEO Steve Jobs has expressed interest in developing an iPhone based on the Chinese carrier's network standard.

China Mobile is developing its next-generation TD-LTE mobile network technology and there have been talks over a possible iPhone tie-up with the carrier.

LTE stands for Long Term Evolution and is the primary technology behind 4G mobile networks. It offers much faster upload and download speeds than 3G. TD-LTE stands for Time Division LTE, a standard developed by China Mobile and currently being trialled by companies such as Ericsson. It offers a compatibility path with WiMAX, which LTE lacks.

More information on TD-LTE can be found at GoMo News.

Earlier this week Apple COO Tim Cook reaffirmed his company's interest in China, saying that Apple was spending "huge energy" in the country.
