Kingston Brings External Hard Drive to iPad

Kingston this week at CES showed PC Advisor an Apple iPad accessory that dramatically increases the storage capabilities of Apple's tablet PC. The 'Mobi SX' is a WEP-secured wireless storage device that allows up to three people to store and then stream media files.

'Mobi SX' is the code name for a device Kingston claims will be available in the second quarter of 2011. Using 802.11a/b/g/n wireless, the 'Mobi SX' will come in 16GB and 32GB capacities, and will work with any Apple iOS device. It is a good-looking device, with the shiny black finish of an Apple iPhone.

The Mobi SX hooks in to your wireless connection, and looks like a Wi-Fi network when you search from your iPad, called 'Kingston Wi-Fi.' According to Kingston, the deviced enjoys four hours of battery life while streaming media, and six hours of standby power.

Kingston told PC Advisor that the Mobi SX device will cost $99 for 16GB and $199 for 32GB when it ships in the second quarter of 2011.

Although the device we saw had a less-than-simple interface, Kingston told us that the Mobi SX will have a user-friendly GUI when it ships. It will allow iPad users to stream content without booting iTunes.
