DIY Yarn Monster Eats Yarn to Make Yarn Balls
For knitters and crochet enthusiasts, winding yarn balls has been an arduous, time-consuming and physically taxing process. It has usually involved, with a few exceptions, cranking a machine by hand in order to wind a ball of yarn that can be easily pulled from the center. The automated winders that are available on the market today are expensive and not particularly interesting to look at.
Enter Union Bridge Labs’ Yarn Monster. Using a Arduino motor control system, the Yarn Monster can eat an entire pile of yarn, and produce a perfectly-wound yarn ball, while looking both hilarious and adorable. The monster is controlled using a XBee module and an accompanying remote, which allows the user to adjust the winding speed and direction.
The source code controlling the Yarn Monster is available for download from the project’s GitHub repository, and its creator is planning on releasing the full schematics soon, for those of you who want to make your own adorable yarn-eating contraption.
