LG Promises 3D Flicks Without the Flicker, 3D Glasses With More Class and Less Glass

LG’s Film Patterned Retarder (FPR) 3D panel technology eliminates both flicker and crosstalk, which, according to LG, are two key complaints wearers of 3D glasses have with today’s shutter glass (SG) technology.
“FPR will effectively allow manufacturers to create an incredible quality 3D TV experience that is healthy, convenient and affordable – all factors hindering the popularity of first-generation 3D products,” said LG Display CEO Kwon Young Soo in a press release circulated ahead of Wednesday's press conference.
According to LG, while 3DTVs with shutter glass technology often require ungainly glasses with sometimes heavy batteries, FPR technology makes use of unpowered, polarized passive 3D glasses, which can be styled with curved lenses or could even be clip-ons that attach to prescription glasses. The technology is under consideration from TV manufacturers such as Vizio, Philips and Toshiba, LG said.
LG states that FPR is based on Patterned Retarder technology, but instead of using an extra layer of polarizing glass on the LCD HDTV, a polarizing film is used instead—a manufacturing adjustment which significantly reduces costs. The result, according to LG, will be affordable 3DTVs, with affordable passive glasses without the flicker or crosstalk.
