Android Outselling Windows Phone 7 by 15:1

More bad news for Windows Phone 7: One UK online retailer reports that it accounts for only 3% of smartphone sales, and that Android phones outsell Windows Phone 7 by a whopping 15:1 margin. Can Microsoft ever catch up?

The UK phone retailer MobilesPlease reports on its blog:

Windows Phone 7 has got off to a sluggish start as far as our customers are concerned, accounting for just 3% of smartphone sales and a little under 2% of overall sales through MobilesPlease.co.uk and our network of partner sites that share our data feed.

The blog goes on to note:

The blog also noted that Symbian smartphones are outselling Windows Phone 7 by 3:1. And the site also gave out figures that say Android phones are outselling Windows Phone 7 by a 15:1 margin.

Keep in mind, of course, that these are figures from a single online retailer. And MobilePlease may not be a typical retailer --- it's a price-comparison site that people use not just to get the best-price on a phone, but also to search for freebies they can get thrown into their phone contract when they buy. So the sales figures may not reflect overall sales.

The Register, though, notes that the MobilePlease shopper is exactly the kind of buyer that Microsoft has been aiming for:

most of those using the site are looking for a decent subsidy on a high-end handset, just the kind of people Microsoft needs to attract.

Windows Phone 7 may be the last chance for Microsoft to gain a foothold in the smartphone market, and so far its launch has been underwhelming. One report said that only 40,000 phones were sold on launch day, and the launch has been plagued by poor demand, undersupply, and less-than-enthusiastic retailer support, a deadly combination.

If Windows Phone 7 doesn't sell well this holiday season, it's hard to see how Microsoft will ever catch up, given surging Android sales and continued iPhone popularity. And the few reports coming in about sales are not at all encouraging.
