Samsung's chief product officer heads for the exit

Big changes may be on the horizon for Samsung. The company's chief product officer, Kevin Packingham, has stepped down.

Packingham joined Samsung in 2011 after serving as an executive at Sprint and Amerilink Telecom. He was a key player in the launch of several of Samsung's flagship products, including the Galaxy S III, and he convinced the company to invest in its own marketing efforts rather than rely on the carriers to push the product for them. He was also greatly involved in the company's patent wars with Apple.

The announcement of Packingham’s departure had initially made the rounds internally at Samsung on Tuesday. There is no cited reasoning for Packingham's exit and a statement from Samsung to the New York Times sticks to the basics:

Kevin Packingham has departed Samsung Mobile. We thank Kevin for his contributions and wish him well in his future endeavors.
