Made in the USA: Moto X manufacturing facility opens its doors on Google Street View

While Apple debuted the latest iPhones to come out of the wonder factories in China on Tuesday, Motorola held a small to-do celebrating its "made in the USA" smartphone, the Moto X. The Google-owned phone maker opened the doors to Flextronics, the Texas-based company contracted to manufacture Motorola’s flagship handset.

Not only did the press get a chance to sneak a peek at the stateside-manufactured smartphone, but the new factory also landed on Google Maps’ Street View . So if you ever wanted to see lines and lines of phones made in a sterile white and blue environment, now’s your chance.

Anyone interested in poking around the production floor will be out of luck, though. Street View only lets you peruse the factory from a balcony surrounding the assembly action happening below.

Customize, customize, customize

“There are 150 million smartphones in the USA. Until Moto X, not one of them was made here,” Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside said in a recent blog post.

Motorola hopes its customized, color-filled approach of allowing Moto X fans to participate in the design of their phone will encourage more American smartphone buyers to pick up the new Moto. With Motorola’s Moto Maker Web app customers can choose back, front, and accent colors, storage size and other features, as well as customize accessories for the phone. The Moto Maker is currently available only to AT&T customers, while more carriers will get access to Moto Maker later in 2013.

Assembling phones to order is much easier when you do it in the U.S., Woodside wrote. He also argued that it’s more convenient to refine a smartphone design “when the people designing the products are near to the people building them.” Flextronics is in Fort Worth, Texas, while Motorola has offices throughout the U.S.

Flextronics ships about 100,000 Moto X devices per week, Woodside told Reuters on Tuesday, with plans to expand that output in the future.

American technology manufacturing has received a small bump of confidence in recent months. In addition to Motorola’s Moto X, Apple plans to assemble its new space age Mac Pro in the U.S. The new Mac Pro is set for release before the end of the year, but pricing and a specific release date have not been announced.
