Lepsis expands your snacking horizons, turns bugs into tasty snacks

INDEX: Award/Mansour Ourasanah

If you’ve made it past the headline, congratulations; we have a real treat in store for you. Every two years, the non-profit organization INDEX: Design to Improve Life hosts the INDEX: Award competition, where dozens of innovative creators submit their designs for the chance to win a prize worth €100,000 (about $133,000).

In a response to several of the challenges put forth by INDEX, one Mansour Ourasanah collaborated with KitchenAid to create the LEPSIS, “a vessel optimized for neatly breeding, feeding, harvesting and killing grasshoppers, before turning them into food.” Ourasanah’s goal is not to gross you out; instead, it's an attempt to curb an impending (and likely inevitable) global food shortage before overpopulation takes its unwelcome toll on society.

Saving the world, one grasshopper at a time. Be sure to read more about the implications of the design at the Umeå Institute of Design.
