Want to live on Mars forever? Apply now!
Want to go to Mars? Well, now you can (maybe)! Mars One has officially started its worldwide search for aspiring astronauts who want to fly to Mars and settle in for the long run on our neighboring planet.
The Mars One mission has 24 to 40 openings, and you can apply to fill one of those slots right now. The Dutch company says that this rag-tag crew of Martian explorers will be the first human settlers to ever arrive on Mars in 2023, sort of like a space-bound Mayflower.
The application process is open to anyone over 18 years old with qualities including “resilience, adaptability, curiosity, empathy, and creativity,” according to Mars One. Applicants need to send in a video of themselves explaining why they want to go to Mars and why they would be the best candidate. There is also an application fee, which is $38 if you are from the United States.
Although anyone over 18 can apply, there will be a long vetting process—including the initial crowd-sourced video rating—that’s expected to stretch into 2015. From there, a narrowed pool of between 24 and 40 applicants will be trained over the course of seven years in dentistry, emergency medicine, general medicine, engineering, biology, mechanics, or any other skill you might need in order to survive on the barren alien planet.
As for the trip itself, the would-be astronauts are expected to launch sometime in 2022 to land on Mars seven months later in 2023. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that this is a one-way trip. There is no rocket to take you back, so you’ll be on Mars indefinitely, where you—along with your fellow space pilgrims—will have to start a new civilization on the alien planet.
Registration is open until August 21, so you have a little time to talk it over with your family—you know, the people who you would probably never see again if you get into the program.
