Designer shows off $17.8 million diamond-encrusted iPhone

Stuart Hughes

U.K.-based designer Stuart Hughes, renowned for his extravagant technology designs including an iPad 2 with t-rex bone shaved into it, has created an iPhone 5 worth $17.8 million.

It is the "world's most expensive phone," Hughes claims.

It took Hughes nine weeks to recreate the chassis of the iPhone 5 in solid, 24ct gold. It was started and finished by hand.

The $17.8 millon iPhone 5 is aone-of-a kind.

The home button was replaced by a 26-carat flawless black diamond, and the chassis was inlaid with 600 white diamonds.

The device's screen is "of course" made of sapphire glass, Hughes said.

The Apple logo on the rear of the device was also inlaid with 53 diamonds.

The handset was commissioned by a Chinese businessman who already owned the black diamond.

Hughes also sells less expensive solid gold iPhone 5s at a mere $39,200.
