Robot dragonfly UAV skips military development, flies directly into homes
Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology have developed a wing-flapping robot that can fly and hover like a real dragonfly. The project originally began with a research grant of $1,000,000 from the US Air Force. Now, the team wants to bring the technology directly to homes as an affordable micro UAV, with the help of an ongoing Indiegogo project.
The TechJect Dragonfly is a palm-sized aerial drone that can hover like a quadrotor and fly with the speed of a traditional miniature fixed-wing aircraft. The team behind the robotic dragonfly say you’ll be able to remotely control the drone though a phone or computer for uses like aerial photography, “advanced gaming,” and security.
Aside from flying around, the Dragonfly also comes equipped with up to 20 environmental sensors, various cameras, and a GPS system for whatever airborne reconnaissance you need. It also comes with a fully customizable SDK to let you tinker around with apps for the robot.
As of this writing, you can still pick up an Alpha Noiseless Special Edition TechJect Dragonfly for $120. You can also upgrade to a higher-tier Dragonfly for additional customization options and upgraded parts.
