Make your old Game Boy Advance cool again by turning it into an arcade cabinet

Jani Ponkko

Some people throw away their old toys, others repurpose them for fame, fun, and finicky Internet people. Jani "Japala" Ponkko is a man who knows what he wants. He wants to make his old Game Boy Advance SP relevant again—by making it into a miniature arcade cabinet, no less.

Jani's home-built pint-sized arcade cabinet is a labor of old-school love. Jani hand-crafted most of the cabinet himself, though he bought the joystick from DigiKey for about $15.

What's neat about this project is that Jani says that didn't obsessively pre-plan it. From what I can tell, he really did wing most of the construction process, an impressive feat given the amount of craftsmanship that went into the cabinet. If I built this project without plans, well, let's just say it wouldn't end well.

Jani's tiny cabinet has seen some travel time since its conception. In fact, he's taken it all the way to Assembly Summer 2012 computer festival in Helsinki and the Campus Party Europe 2012 event in Berlin. Mario himself got a chance to play with it, as you can see from the photo above. (It's up for sale, incidentally.)

If you want to turn your old Game Boy Advance into something that'll turn the nerds crazy, check out Ponkko's website for a comprehensive chronicle of the process.
