The Boombot REX is a smart speaker that doesn't mind playing dirty

Boombotix/Kickstarter

Boombotix's trendy-looking attempt at creating what it calls the "first ultra-portable 2.1 speaker system ever built" has certainly hit the right notes with the Kickstarter crowd. How so? Well, they've already surpassed their initial funding goals, and there's still 36 days to spare.

But let's take it back a notch. What exactly is the Boombot REX? According to Boombotix, it's a speaker system that will feature a noise-canceling microphone, a built-in clip, multi-device compatibility, a bass woofer, and even Siri integration.

Although we're going to need a hands-on before we can verify these claims, the creators (and the people who certified that it will be IP-53 water-resistant) seem confident that the Boombot Rex will be able to withstand both rain and snow.

Built to fit the palm of your hand, the housing will apparently have a "ruggedized high-impact ABS shell with the circuit board secured to the internal frame in four locations." Aside from being able to expect it to take a beating, we can also plan on having six hours of non-stop music thanks to the "rechargeable medical-grade lithium-battery," if the Boombot REX works as advertised.

All said and done, however, I'm slightly worried. It's one thing to hear Gangnam Style blaring from televisions and radio stations. If this takes off, where the heck am I going to hide?
