Check out these incredibly detailed laser-cut maps of major cities
When you think of laser cutting, you probably think of big factories or smaller-scale operations such as jewelry-making or laser engraving. Artist Dan Linden had something else in mind, though, when he used a laser cutter to create these stunning maps of several major cities.
Dan's laser-cut creations, which he calls Cut Maps, are street maps cut from a large sheet of metal that got blasted with a laser. He uses a $10,000 Rabbit Laser cutter owned by his boss to cut sheets of mounting board with the map pattern. Once the map is all cut out, he frames his creation.
We don't know a whole lot else how Dan goes about making his maps—he plans on turning Cut Maps into an actual business, so Dan isn't giving away any of his secrets. That said, Dan said on Reddit that he wants to make plasma-cut maps from aluminum sheets, and to try and cut a large piece of hardboard, too.
Dan initially made the maps for fun, but he currently sells the maps on Etsy, and they start at $100. As of this writing, you can purchase maps of New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and Washington DC, among other cities. He also takes requests, so if you ask nicely, he might can you a map of your hometown.
