HTC unveils Droid DNA, Verizon's first 1080p phone
HTC's answer to the gigantic smartphone craze is the Droid DNA, a Verizon Android phone with a 5-inch, 1080p display. The phone was announced early this morning at a private event in New York.
This is HTC's largest smartphone yet in terms of screen size, and the first phone in the United States with a 1920-by-1080 resolution display, for a pixel density of 440 pixels per inch.
Other specs include a 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, an 8-megapixel rear camera, a 2.1-megapixel front camera, Beats Audio, NFC and, of course, 4G LTE data speeds. The Droid DNA measures 0.38 inches thick and weighs just under 0.31 pounds.
For software, the Droid DNA runs Android 4.1, codenamed Jelly Bean, with HTC's Sense interface on top. The camera uses the same ImageSense technology that debuted in HTC's One line of phones earlier this year, with features like burst shooting and the ability to capture photos from recorded video. Although the phone includes Google Play for apps and other media, it's also pre-loaded with Amazon's suite of apps for shopping, MP3 purchases, Kindle books, and Audible audiobooks.
In terms of specs, the Droid DNA seems like a powerhouse. The one major point of concern, however, is its 2020 mAh, non-removable battery. Verizon's spec sheet claims that the phone will get up to 12.8 hours of usage time, but we've never seen a 1080p phone before, and the extra pixels could have greater power demands than phones with 720p displays.
By comparison, Motorola's Droid Razr Maxx HD—the leader in our recent battery life comparison—has a 3,300 mAh battery, and lasted through 12 hours and 11 minutes of continuous 720p video playback. Samsung's Galaxy Note II, which has a 5.5-inch display and a 3,100 mAh battery, lasted through 11 hours and 15 minutes in the same test.
The Droid DNA costs $200 with a two-year contract. Verizon is taking pre-orders now, with estimated shipping by November 19. The phone will be in stores on November 21.
