LG Nexus 4 available from UK retailer ahead of launch

Google is expected to announce the Nexus 4, its next flagship smartphone built by LG on Monday, but a U.K. retailer has beat Google to the punch and started taking pre-orders for the device.

Based on what Carphone Warehouse, a popular UK electronics retailer, is selling, the smartphone pretty much lives up to the Nexus 4 rumors that have been circulating recently—including reports that the device mirrors the specs of the LG Optimus G.

In addition to the Nexus 4 and Android Jelly Bean 4.2, Google on Monday is also expected to announce a new 32GB version of the Nexus 7 with 3G connectivity as well as a 10-inch Samsung tablet.

The Carphone Warehouse LG-built Nexus 4 features a 4.7-inch touchscreen and runs Android 4.2, a newer version of Jelly Bean that is also expected to be announced Monday. It's not clear whether the pre-sale was an error and Carphone Warehouse will soon take the phone off its site or if other retailers will start offering the Nexus 4 ahead of its launch.

Nexus 4 full specs

Based on the listing at Carphone Warehouse, the Nexus 4 includes a 4.7-inch touchscreen with 1280-by-768 resolution at 320 pixels per inch, putting the screen in Apple’s Retina display territory.

The handset also has a 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor, 8GB of storage, a front-facing camera, 8 megapixel rear-facing camera, near-field communication, microUSB, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. The device measures 0.36-inches thick and Carphone Warehouse says it will start shipping the device on Oct. 30.

There's no mention of RAM or battery life and the 8GB of storage is a surprise, since most reports pegged the device as having 16GB of onboard storage. The listing also doesn't mention a microSD slot, so you may be stuck with onboard storage with this device.

It’s not clear whether there will be other versions of the handset with more storage. The model on Carphone Warehouse is a no-money down, no-contract phone. So it's possible that this device has lower storage to compete with Apple's free 8GB iPhone 4, and that other models with beefier storage will also be available.

The Carphone Warehouse Nexus 4 leak was first reported by Spanish-language site XatakaMovil.

UPDATE: Shortly after this story was published, Carphone Warehouse removed the LG Nexus 4 listing from its website.
