iPhone 5 to debut on Cricket Wireless on Sept. 28

You may want to hold off on picking up an iPhone 5 from one of the major wireless carriers when the new Apple smartphone goes on sale next Friday, because a week later you can buy a pre-paid, contract-free version of the iPhone 5 from Cricket Wireless. The budget carrier announced that it will start carrying the iPhone 5 in select areas across the U.S. starting Sept. 28, following the iPhone 5's official launch on Sept. 21.

Cricket started carrying the 16GB iPhone 4S and an 8GB iPhone 4 in June. The iPhone 4S sold for $500. Cricket did not announce pricing for the iPhone 5; however, considering major carriers such as AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon are selling the new handset for $200, the same subsidized price as the iPhone 4S, Cricket's pricing could remain unchanged as well.

Even though you have to pay a hefty price upfront to get the phone, Cricket offers some pretty good deals on smartphone plans starting at $50 for unlimited voice calls and text messaging. The plans also feature “unlimited” data that is throttled after you pass your plan's maximum of 1GB or 2.5GB of full-speed data.

Apple's new iPhone 5 announced Wednesday features a new 4-inch display with 1136-by-640 resolution at 326 pixels per inch, an Apple A6 processor, 8 megapixel camera with 1080p video capture at 30 frames per second, 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, and LTE mobile broadband connectivity.
