Asus Vivo Tab and Vivo Tab RT: Windows tablets with laptop docks
Asus has announced new details on its Windows laptop-tablet hybrids, now dubbed the Vivo Tab and Vivo Tab RT.
The two slates, formerly known as the Tablet 810 and 600, use the same folding hinge concept that Asus introduced in its Transformer Android tablet line. The concept may be an even better fit for Windows 8 and Windows RT, which both offer a classic desktop for cursors and keyboards.
The Asus Vivo Tab is the Windows 8 version of the tablet, running on an Intel Atom processor with support for legacy Windows software. It has an 11.6-inch, 1366-by-768 resolution display, 2 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. It also includes Wacom's active digitizer technology for stylii. The Vivo Tab measures 0.34 inches thick and weighs roughly 1.49 pounds.
The ARM-based Asus Vivo Tab RT has a smaller, 10.1-inch display at the same resolution of 1366-by-768. Specs include a quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 processor, 2 GB of RAM, 32 GB of storage, an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel rear camera.
Both tablets come with a dock that turns them into clamshell laptops, with a full QWERTY keyboard, trackpad and extended battery. The Vivo Tab dock has two USB ports, while the Viva Tab RT dock has just one. They both use a large hinge to adjust the screen angle and fold shut.
Asus announced the two tablets at the IFA trade show in Berlin, but didn't announce pricing or availability. Windows 8 is still about two months away, so expect most PC makers to stay mum on those details during the show.
