Impress your geek friends with this homemade R2-D2 drink dispenser
The next time you have a party, why not invite R2-D2 to serve up your drinks? What's that, you can't? Oh well; you can always build R2 instead.
The R2-D2 Beverage Machine by Matt Fuchs, Jessica Garcia and Zach Hyder combines a number of everyday objects into something you can use to impress (?) your friends at your next get-together. The project consists of a Super Soaker with a motor attached to it, a plastic tub, a few LEDs, some paint, and some electronic components.
To build this droid-themed dispenser, you start by drilling holes into the tub for the dispenser, the LEDs, and the activator button. The legs and head are both made from styrofoam, though you'll have to do a bit of cutting and sanding to form the right shapes.). A PVC pipe connects the head and body, making it easy to pour your drink of choice into the dispenser.
The trickiest part involves disassembling the water gun and making sure you have the right wiring for the pump, motor and gearbox for the project—it helps to know how to solder, too. Once you attach all of the electronics and connect the nozzles, nozzles, put everything together and fill the dispenser with your libation of choice! Just stick a cup under the spout and press the button, and R2 will serve up a drink.
This project is great if you want to perfect your hacking skills, and it'll give you a conversation piece for your next shindig. And if you feel comfortable messing around with electronics, you could add R2-D2 sound effects as it dispenses your drink for some extra cool points.
