Burner for iOS lets you make disposable phone numbers

In today’s world of always being connected, sometimes you just want to get away from it all. Ad Hoc Labs has released a new app called Burner for iPhones that takes that a step further by providing disposable phone numbers you can get rid of once you're done with them.

As spotted by BoingBoing, the Burner app lets you create a temporary number you can use to place calls and send texts, just like you would with a regular phone number. Technically, your calls and messages still piggy back on your regular carrier service, but when they get to the recipient, it appears as though it came from your Burner number.

A temporary number might be useful as a one-time point of contact you could use for speed dating, Craigslist transactions, short-term contract work, side businesses, heists, 007 activities, or any other situation where you don’t want to be found later.

The app costs $1.99 on the US or Canada iOS App Store, and it comes with three credits ($2) for the lowest-tier plan. The Mini Burner gives you a number that lasts for seven days, 20 minutes of talk time, or 60 texts. You can also add on more Burner plans if you need additional temporary numbers.

The largest plans cost 8 credits ($5), and lets you buy a Large Burner for a number that lasts for 30 days, 90 minutes of talk time, or 270 texts. Alternatively, you could spend the same 8 credits to get the longer-lasting Long Burner plan, which gives you fake number that's good for 60 days, 75 minutes of talk time, or 225 texts.

Of course, you could just end your plan prematurely and burn the phone number, permanently erasing it. Once you do, no one will be able to reach you from that number ever again.
