Maxthon: Pop Goes the Video

Maxthon may be the best Web browser you’ve never heard of, but that doesn’t stop its developers from pushing the envelope. Beijing-based Maxthon International is testing a video popup feature which allows you to lift videos from Web pages and continue to watch them in a separate box as you surf elsewhere.

A new test build (download link) based on version 2.5.4 of the highly customizable browser offers a “float button” setting within the Maxthon Setup Center. When enabled, a “Detach Video” button appears in the upper right corner of a compatible video. Clicking the button pops the video off of the Web page—leaving blank space behind—and into a separate window which can be moved and resized.

You can view a second video on the main browser page as the first continues to play in its window. According to Maxthon, the popup feature works with YouTube, Hulu, Truveo, Yahoo! Video and many other video Web sites.

No date has been set as to when the video popup feature might be added to an official version of Maxthon.
