LG Electronics DU-30LZ30
At a Glance
LG Electronics' DU-30LZ30 is the only model we looked at for our April 2005 LCD TV roundup that has an integrated ATSC digital tuner in addition to a standard analog NTSC TV tuner, meaning that it can receive over-the-air digital broadcasts without an additional set-top box.
This 30-inch LCD set received average scores in most of our picture-quality assessment categories, but it ranked second in our tests for detail and standard-definition programs.
Its handsome black-and-silver cabinet has a convenient set of audio/video inputs on the side and numerous connections in back. Noteworthy features include a half-dozen audio and video presets for different types of content and picture formats with varied aspect ratios--all easily accessible via the remote. A sound system with two 15-watt two-way stereo speakers and built-in SRS TruSurround XT delivered musical tracks and action-film soundtracks with plenty of gusto for a den or a small living room.
The XD Engine image-enhancement system improved the brightness, contrast, detail, and color of varied content in our tests. A split-screen demo lets you compare shots with and without this option activated, but you can't save individual settings for input sources, nor can you adjust red, blue, and green levels separately.
Both the on-screen menus and the universal remote control are a breeze to use. Documentation includes a troubleshooting checklist. Another plus: LG's generous 24/7 toll-free telephone tech support.
Solid picture quality combines with good documentation and above-average tech support to make this attractively priced LCD TV a real bargain.
