TeuxDeux for iPhone
The arrival of iOS 5’s built-in Reminders app has made life tougher for developers of basic “getting things done” offerings. TeuxDeux, a $3 iPhone app from Swissmiss & Fictive Kin, looks great, but suffers from the new competition.
TeuxDeux is charmingly simple: You make a list of things you need to do and assign them to a calendar. Once you’ve completed a task, tap on it and a line crosses it off your list. You can drag the items up and down the list to sort them by priority. Editing a task is a bit counterintuitive—you must drag the item back up to the top-of-the-screen text box to make changes.
The app easily syncs with the TeuxDeux website, allowing you to easily manage and sync your tasks from both your phone and your desktop. Of course, iOS 5’s Reminders works with iCal, Outlook, iCloud, or any CalDAV-enabled server, so changes to your to-dos update across all your devices as well.
TeuxDeux has some major shortcomings of its own. It doesn’t let you set deadlines for specific times of day. And it doesn’t offer the option of an alarm when the task deadline arrives. Reminders does both of those things—and it does them for free.
There’s nothing wrong with a simple list-making app. If you charge $3, though, you have to stand head-and-shoulders above the free competition. TeuxDeux doesn’t.
