The first flat-panel televisions to bear the Motorola brand name should be available in the U.S. and Asian markets within the next few months, the Taiwanese company making the products said Tuesday at the Computex trade show in Taipei.
Moxell Technology plans to begin selling PDP (plasma display panel) televisions under the Motorola brand in China from this month and a range of LCD televisions bearing the name in the U.S. market from August, says Wynn Yiu, executive vice president of the Taipei-based company, which is a subsidiary of Hong Kong's Proview International Holdings.
Moxell, which has a multi-year license to use the Motorola brand name on a range of consumer electronics products, is showing DVD players and flat-panel televisions at Computex. Under the deal, Moxell designed the products with input from Motorola and is handling the manufacturing, Yiu says.

Motorola-brand monitors are already on sale in China, with PDP televisions next on the schedule, he says. LCD TVs will follow in July and digital CRT televisions in August or September. LCD TVs will go on sale in the U.S. in August, followed by PDP TVs and rear-projection TVs based on Texas Instruments' DLP technology. Sales in other Asian nations are scheduled to begin from July, Yiu says.
Moxell is showing LCD TVs at Computex in six screen sizes: 14-inch, 17-inch, 20-inch, 26-inch, 32-inch, and 46-inch, and PDP TVs with 42-inch and 50-inch screens.
Also on display is a DVD player and a portable DVD player with built-in 7-inch screen. Launch of the DVD players is planned for July or August in the China and in the U.S. later in the year, Yiu says.
The first generation of products were largely designed and developed by Moxell. However, the company is planning to tap Motorola's networking expertise for subsequent products, he says. Moxell's licensing deal is with Motorola's Broadband Communications Sector business, which is responsible for the company's digital set-top boxes and cable modems.
"We'll be working with Motorola to merge broadband into the products," Yiu says.
