This skinny little silver, 3.2-megapixel camera sure looks appealing and feels well-made--it's just 0.6-inch thick and weighs only 5.1 ounces, making it easy to pocket. It's also one of the few point-and-shoot cameras with a rotating body: A hinge in the center of the camera allows you to turn the left half of the camera, directing the lens toward your shot while you keep your eyes on the LCD screen.

However, the rotating lens poses a few problems. Its location at the top-left corner of the camera means it tends to collect fingerprints when you rotate it back and forth. Furthermore, all of the controls are located above and to the right side of the LCD, so while one hand is gripping the lens side, the other has to fumble for buttons.

Another downside: The $399 SL300R doesn't have an optical viewfinder. Finally, when using its single rechargeable lithium-ion battery, the SL300R lasted only 44 minutes on one battery charge--the second-worst showing among models we tested. The average of cameras in this price range is twice as long.

In our image tests, the SL300R scored near the bottom of our test pool. Colors in some photos looked muted, and we noticed splotchiness.

However, the SL300R is quite speedy--it starts up in about a second; and when operating in its fastest nonflash mode, it can capture up to 3.5 frames per second (but only for five shots) before pausing to move them to its 16MB SD card.

The SL300R can take videos of up to 30 seconds at 640 by 480 resolution. The video quality looked fine, but the audio quality was weak.

Although the SL300R's rotating lens distinguishes it, that's not enough for us to recommend the unit highly. Other point-and-shoot cameras in this price range deliver better image quality and more desirable features.
